This is a bird whose numbers are declining although they used to be fairly common throughout the range. A brown, chicken-like bird, the greater prairie chicken eats insects, plant food, fruit, leaves, flowers, shoots, seeds and grain. It is especially fond of rose hips. The male has golden neck sacs that it inflates during courtship to make a deep booming sound which makes him irresistable!
